He obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Miami, Florida and was a faculty member in the Department of Virology and Epidemiology at Baylor College of Medicine from 1974 to 1981. His recent research encompasses the transmission of pathogens in indoor environments, identifying pathogen hotspots, ways pathogens move from one location to another, development of new disinfectants, interventions to reduce the exposure to pathogens and quantitative microbial risk assessment. He has been an author on more than 500 articles including several books in environmental microbiology. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the 1999 Award of Excellence in Environmental Health from National Association of County and City Health Officials.
