TEA and LCA with BioSTEAM: Quantifying the Economic and Environmental Impact of Emerging Biotechnologies
Goals
(i) Understand BioSTEAM’s flexible modeling framework. (ii) Apply BioSTEAM design algorithms for biomass processing, bioreactors, and separations. (iii) Practice efficient workflows to assess the sustainability of a process and identify key drivers.
Description
BioSTEAM is an open-source library in Python that empowers researchers to evaluate the potential economic and environmental impact of biochemical production processes. Since its release in 2020, over 20 scientific articles have been published leveraging BioSTEAM to address core questions related to technological development and research prioritization. In this workshop, we demonstrate how to use BioSTEAM’s fast and flexible platform to evaluate the industrial production of oleochemicals and organic acids, and elucidate the key drivers of sustainability through rigorous uncertainty and sensitivity analyses.
We will begin with an overview of process design, techno-economic analysis (TEA), and life cycle assessment (LCA) principles. Using published BioSTEAM models, we will illustrate how these tools can be used to assess the potential sustainability of emerging biotechnologies. Then, we will dive into hands-on case studies focused on the fermentation of conventional and cellulosic sugars into oleochemicals and organic acids. Attendees will be able to access BioSTEAM directly from their browser, without the need for installation, to work on the case studies.
By the end of the workshop, you will have gained expert knowledge on process modeling and sustainability, a deep understanding of BioSTEAM’s flexible modeling framework, and the ability to streamline TEA/LCA through efficient BioSTEAM workflows. We will also use this opportunity to showcase exciting experimental features in BioSTEAM and present a roadmap of BioSTEAM’s development.
