Robert Schwartz, Abbott Labs (ret.) and editor-in-chief of the SIMB Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (2010-2015) has been selected as the 2015 David Perlman Awardee.
The award will be presented in conjunction with the SIMB Recent Advances in Fermentation Technology (RAFT) conferences. This year’s RAFT conference will be held November 8-11 in Clearwater Beach, Florida.
The Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology is currently accepting abstracts for oral and poster presentations to be presented at the 38th Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals (SBFC). Technical talks and posters make up the majority of presentations, however detailed and informative presentations regarding commercial- and demonstration-scale endeavors advancing and promoting the emerging bio-based economy are strongly encouraged. Presenters are asked to submit their abstracts to one of the six general research tracks listed below. The anticipated number of sessions for each track is indicated parenthetically, but may vary based on the number and quality of abstracts received in each track. Similar to recent years, each session is expected to have 7 oral presentations. Those abstracts not selected for oral presentations will automatically transferred to a poster session. Poster presentations are not expected to be limited.

SIMB President Tim Davies appointed a Presidential Committee on Strategic Planning whose goal was to update the Strategic Plan including the mission, vision, core values and goals of SIMB. Susan Bagley, Jeff Schwartz, Scott Baker, Chris Lowe, Tim and myself have been working since November on a new Strategic Plan. The Board of Directors and the SIMB committee members has reviewed and provided feedback which is reflected in the draft version included here. Our goal is to get final approval for the document at the August 6 Board Meeting at the SIMB Annual Meeting. The draft Strategic Plan will also be discussed at the SIMB Business Meeting on August 5. Once the final document is approved the committees will formulate plans and actions on how their activities will address the aspirations and goals that are outlined in the Strategic Plan.
The award winners for this year have been announced. SIMB honors several members and others at the SIMB Annual Meeting through our various awards. Nominations are taken from members in March of each year and the awardees are chosen at the Spring Board of Directors meeting.

SIMB is pleased to announce a new Society Award, the David Perlman Award, to be presented biannually in conjunction with the RAFT meeting and the successful candidate will present a plenary lecture during RAFT.
Recipients should have made outstanding contributions to the area of Industrial Fermentation, Process Development and / or Manufacturing. They should be visionaries, exhibit leadership qualities, and have pioneered efforts in industrial microbiology and/or biotechnology. While desirable, a strong publication or patent record is not to be used as the sole criteria for selection of the award winner since industrial “How To” publications are limited. For this award, “Excellence” should also be defined, at least in part, as commercial success and be process focused.
